The first step is getting a reliable boat plan. There are plenty of free plans on the internet, but be warned you could find yourself lost half way through your build! The problem with these is that they only offer basic dimensions, a black and white drawing, and no further instruction! If youve never built anything like this before it could be very frustrating and perhaps even impossible for you to learn this way.
If you purchase a boat plan it often will come with much clearer instructions to help you! Often times you can even call or e-mail the plan provider for support. They are usually happy to help you get the most of their product. They can recommend the right woods or epoxy or even help if you get stuck!
Boat plans *can* be expensive if you buy them from the wrong place. Some sites charge as much as several hundred dollars for just one plan. The best way Ive found is to purchase a package of plans. These often end up being much cheaper and gives you a huge variety of plans to choose from. This way if your original plan doesnt work for you then you can pick something else.
I can point you to one such package called MyBoatPlans. This site offers an impressive package that has over 500 plans. They have plans for pretty much any boat youd ever want to build too. They also offer step by step instructions and some really valuable tutorial videos to help learn beginner basics like bending wood, and building joints. Click here to see their site.
