When searching for tips for free boat plans I came across this article in the Maine Sunday Telegram dated 15 July, 2007.

As far as amateur boatbuilding projects go, this is about as ambitious as it gets. I am always amazed at the things accomplished from a dream.

Here is an extract of what some of the article said …

“Harold Arndt didnt know how to weld when he decided to build a schooner out of steel. Nor, for that matter, did he have money to buy materials or access to deep water where he could eventually launch the ship.

Today, a 113-foot rust-streaked hull, constructed entirely of industrial scrap, rises up among the pine trees in an overgrown sheep pasture beside Arndts house off Byram Avenue in Freeport.

It is a 110-ton vessel that is the largest ship built in Freeport in nearly a century, amateur-built boats often defy economic logic but make sense in terms of their owners aspirations and enjoyment.”

Goes to show what can be done doesn’t it.

My first Blog

This blog was created to document my building of a 44 steel trawler designed by Bruce Roberts. Technically the boat is considered by Bruce Roberts to be a 43 model as the length on deck is 4310". From this day forward Im rounding up and calling it a 44 trawler for the purpose of paying harbor fees as the overall length has grown to 48 with the addition of a bow pulpit for my ground tackle ( anchors and anchor rollers in my case) and a 2 swim platform on the stern. The beam of my yet to be named trawler is 15 and she draws 5 of water depth. Her hull form is full displacement. She should displace around 30 tons with a D/L of 398. The D/l is boat speak measuring the displacement to length ratio and pretty much tells one that she is a stout boat and is considered a true trawler.

Im building this boat during my spare time in my barn and have been working on her for a little over five years now. Due to height restrictions in my shop Ive had to build her in two sections and join the sections together outside of the barn for fitting of the wheel house and salon cabinetry. Once Ive fitted the wheel house and salon cabinetry Ill lift the upper module off the hull and transport the two units to the river for final fit out and launching. Ive kicked around the different options of how to build and transport this boat and the two module approach seems to work best for me.

If all goes well and I keep my welds to the correct side of the lines ( remember to measure twice cut once.....) she should look something like the picture above. Check back often as Ill be posting pictures and twisted opinions of how things are going here at Conalls boat build.

I am always on the look out for any tips on free boat plans. While having a look around I found this article that discusses some methods for boatbuilding.

Ever thought about building your own boat but have been frightened off by the thought that you may not have the time, the ability or money? When recently looking for tips on free boat plans I was reminded about the importance of safety.

There are many different kinds of boating accessories to outfit a boat with whether it is to make it look better or perform better.

The most important boat accessories though are safety items which ensure safer voyages for everyone. Lifejackets are vital boating accessories to have even if you are not traveling far. No matter what happens on the water the chance of something going wrong and having to leave the boat is a possibility every person who steps on a boat should be prepared for.

Boating accessories such as lifejackets can be used whenever the passengers of the boat need to be in the water.

Even if you are an expert swimmer lifejackets are needed boating accessories considering you could be miles from shore or caught in a current carrying you away from land. It’s important to have different sizes of lifejackets for children and adults. Obviously an adult life jacket will not fit a child properly and this can be very dangerous should the child end up in the water.

Flares are important boating accessories to carry on a boat. You never know when something could go wrong with the boat and letting others know there is a problem by firing a flare will bring help. Even if there is nothing wrong with the boat there are many other possibilities when using a flare is useful.

Flares are boating accessories to be used when you need to signal somebody for any reason whatsoever. Along the lines of flares for boating accessories for safety, flare guns can also be used to send any signal of distress. Once the flare has been ignited, help will soon be on its way.

Sometimes boats are far away from anything and if something happens where you need help radios are important boating accessories to have. Radios can be life savers as they can call ports, other boats, or even the coast guard in case of an emergency.

Being able to communicate in any way with others is needed on a boat as many times the boat is far from any help. Radios can bring help regardless of how far away from land the boat is and for this reason they are important boating accessories for safety.

Boating can be an exciting and relaxing way to spend time on the water. Being in the open water, or even close to shore, many things can go wrong whether it be with the boat or with a person on the boat.

Preparing for the worst is the safest way to go and by using boating accessories for this purpose it will ensure all safety issues are covered.

Taking precautions and using safety boating accessories make the experience that much more enjoyable as it makes it safe as well.

A blog about the pursuit of free boat plans – How To Create An Affordable Boat Building Workshop

I came across this article when searching for free boat plans in the American Chronicle dated 19 July, 2007.

You can use your boat plans to determine the size of your workshop. From the plans determine the finished size then add two to three feet to each side to calculate the size of your workshop.

Here is some of what the article said …

“The launch of the television show NCIS has heightened the awareness of boat building as Mark Harmons character, Special Agent Gibbs, pours over his boat plans in almost every episode. Granted, building a boat in your basement might not be the best idea (Gibbs never explained how he got the boat out of his house), but there are other ways to create an affordable boat building workshop.”

The article then gives valuable tips about setting up your workshop.
